About the Coach

Karen McPherson is a high school math coach for Buncombe County Schools located in Western NC. She provides professional development embedded in the classroom that focuses on improving teaching and learning. Her work includes

  • researching and developing curriculum resources
  • identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement for all students
  • and collaborating with teachers regarding a range of effective and innovative math practices.
Mrs. McPherson taught for 13 years before becoming an instructional coach. In addition to coaching, she is an independent consultant having provided professional development for teachers across NC since 2007. She is a National Board Certified teacher with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Math Education from UNC-Chapel Hill and MA Ed and Administrative Degrees from Western Carolina University. She is an avid paper crafter and lives with her family (dog included) in Old Fort, NC.
